John Terry felt our victory over Manchester United was all the more significant given the fact Arsenal and Manchester City had both won on Saturday.
Samuel Eto'o scored a hat-trick as we overcame David Moyes's side 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, our fifth consecutive Barclays Premier League win.
Terry, who produced another marvellous display at the heart of the defence alongside Gary Cahill , thought the visitors started the game the stronger of the two teams, but paid tribute to Eto'o.
'I think in the first 15 minutes they was definitely on top in the game but we didn't panic, kept our shape and hit them on the counter attack with a great goal from Samuel,' said the Blues skipper.
'I said to him before the game we need a goal from him and he said he loves the big games. We could see he was up for it before the game and it was great for him to get his hat-trick.'
The win leaves us two points behind leaders Arsenal and just a point behind City, who we meet at the Etihad in a fortnight's time.
Terry believes the squad as a whole are coming together at a crucial time, and stressed the importance of a victory that extends our lead over United to 12 points.
'We're pushing, we're trying to keep in touch with Arsenal and Manchester City and, as the manager said, those two are looking really strong at the moment. But it's important we keep within touching distance of them.
'Earlier in the season we maybe chased games too much but the manager has eased that out. We've collectively worked on the defensive side in the last two weeks and that's paid off. We look more of a unit now and together, whoever comes in, everybody's performing and nobody can feel out of place.'
